What is Modafinil?
Modafinil alleviates severe tiredness caused by narcolepsy and other sleep disorders, such as sleep paralysis (obstructive sleep apnea). It can also be used to keep you alert during the day if your job schedule prevents you from getting a regular night’s sleep (shift work sleep disorder).
This drug will not cure your sleep difficulties and may not completely eliminate your tiredness. Modafinil isn’t a substitute for getting adequate sleep. It should not be used to treat fatigue or prevent sleep in those who do not have a sleep problem.
The mechanism through which modafinil keeps you awake is unknown. It is considered to function by influencing brain chemicals that regulate the sleep/wake cycle.
How to Use It
Before you start using modafinil, and every time you obtain a refill, read the Medication Guide issued by your pharmacist. Inquire with your doctor or pharmacist if you have any concerns.
Take this narcolepsy medicine by mouth, with or without food, once daily in the morning, as instructed by your doctor. Alternatively, if your doctor instructs you, the entire daily amount of modafinil can be divided into two doses: one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
Take this drug by mouth, with or without food, as advised by your doctor for obstructive sleep apnea, generally once daily in the morning. Unless your doctor advises you to stop, keep using your existing treatments (such as a CPAP machine or a mouth device).
If you’re using modafinil for shift work sleep problems, take it by mouth, with or without food, as advised by your doctor, generally once a day, one hour before your shift begins. The dose is determined by your medical condition and treatment response. To receive the best benefit from this drug, take it on a daily basis.
You may get withdrawal symptoms if you suddenly stop using this drug (such as shaking, sweating, chills, nausea, vomiting, confusion). To avoid withdrawal, your doctor may gradually reduce your dose. If you’ve been using modafinil for a long period or in large quantities, you’re more likely to have withdrawal symptoms. If you have withdrawal symptoms, contact your doctor or pharmacist straight away.
It’s possible that if you use this drug for a long time, it won’t function as effectively. If this drug isn’t functioning as well as it used to, talk to your doctor.
Despite the fact that it benefits a large number of individuals, this medicine has the potential to create addiction. If you have a substance use issue (such as overuse or addiction to drugs/alcohol), your risk may be increased. To reduce the danger of addiction, take this medicine precisely as directed. For further information, see your doctor or pharmacist.
If your illness does not improve or worsen, contact your doctor.
It’s possible that you’ll get headaches, nausea, agitation, dizziness, or problems sleeping. Tell your doctor or pharmacist right away if any of these side effects continue or worsen.
Remember that your doctor provided this medicine because he or she believes the benefit to you outweighs the risk of adverse effects. The majority of people who use this medicine do not have any substantial adverse effects.
If you have any major side effects, such as a racing/pounding/irregular heartbeat or mental/mood abnormalities, contact your doctor straight once (such as agitation, confusion, depression, hallucinations, rare thoughts of suicide).
If you have any really significant adverse effects, such as chest discomfort, get medical attention immediately away.
This medicine seldom causes a severe allergic response. If you detect any signs of a major allergic response, such as fever, enlarged lymph nodes, rash, itching/swelling (particularly of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or problems breathing, seek medical treatment immediately once.
